Exhaled Nitric Oxide Test
What is it?
The Exhaled Nitric Oxide Test is designed to measure the amount of inflammation in your airways.
What is involved?
The test involves breathing into a tube on a small hand held device. First you will be asked to blow out into the room and then take a big breath in on the tube, once your lungs are full we will ask you to blow down the tube at a set speed for about 10 seconds. The device will measure how much inflammation is in your airways from markers in your exhaled breath.
What happens after the test?
The results of the test will be reviewed by your consultant as part of your on-going care.
Nasal Nitric Oxide Test
What is it?
The Nasal Nitric Oxide test is designed to measure the amount of nitric oxide present in your nasal cavity. This tells your doctor valuable information about whether the small hairs in your airways which help clear mucus are working properly and whether there are any blockages.
What is involved?
Before the test we will ask you to blow your nose. The test involves placing a small bung into the entrance of one of your nostrils and at the same time you breathe through your mouth for 30 seconds. The nasal bung will draw air from your nostril and the device will analyse the amount of nitric oxide. You may be required to perform this in both nostrils.
What happens after the test?
The results of the test will be reviewed by your consultant as part of your on-going care.
