Non-urgent advice: Sample Labeling
All patient samples must be labeled with:
- name
- date of birth
- NHS number / hospital number
Peripheral blood samples
Adults: 5 ml blood
Children: 1 to 5 ml blood
Molecular analysis: EDTA
Microarray analysis: EDTA
Karyotype analysis: Lithium heparin
If only small tubes are available, please place the sample into multiple tubes.
DNA samples
Samples of extracted DNA (50ul DNA at concentration of ~500ng/ul) should be in a leak proof plastic container and sent by first class post.
Amniotic fluid samples
Please contact the laboratory prior to arranging a prenatal sample.
10 to 20ml in sterile leak-proof container.
Chorionic villi samples
Please contact the laboratory prior to arranging a prenatal sample.
10-30mg in sterile tissue transport medium (provided by the laboratory) within leak-proof plastic container.
Placental biopsy samples
Please contact the laboratory prior to arranging a prenatal sample.
Chorionic villi and placental membranes in sterile tissue transport medium (provided by the laboratory) within leak-proof plastic container.
Products of conception samples
Place in a sterile leak-proof container.
Stem cells or other cultured cells
Cultured cells in sterile container or fixed cell suspension in a leak proof container.
Skin biopsy
4mm2 (minimum 3mm2) sample in sterile tissue transport medium (provided by the laboratory) within leak-proof plastic container.
Cell Free Fetal DNA Analysis
Please contact the laboratory prior to arranging a prenatal sample.
Cultured cells, muscle biopsy, paraffin blocks, Guthrie cards, saliva, mouthwash or buccal smears
