You can be referred to genetics by your GP, a hospital doctor or specialist nurse or midwife.
To contact via telephone, call 01223 216446 and ask for the ‘on call’ genetic counsellor.
Your referral needs to be in writing and can either be sent by post to:
Consultant on call
Department of Clinical Genetics
Box 134
Addenbrooke's Treatment Centre
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust
Hills Road
Cambridge
CB2 0QQ
Or it can be sent by email to: add-tr.ReferralsClinicalGenetics@nhs.net
Although we are not found on the ‘choose and book’ system for appointments we will offer you a choice of appointments at your nearest hospital, or alternatively you can be seen in Cambridge. As we still work within time constraints, there should not be a long delay between your referral and appointment.
We may need to gather information and once this is available we assess whether or not an appointment would be appropriate for you.
If we offer you an appointment, you will be sent a letter requesting that you telephone the appointments team to book an appointment. This will allow you to choose whether to come to Cambridge, or be seen locally at an outreach clinic. If you are asked to attend a specialist clinic you may need to come to Addenbrooke’s to see that specialist team.
If you do not call the department within the stated time, it is assumed that you no longer wish to be seen and you will be taken off the waiting list. If you wish to be seen but have missed the deadline, you will need to be re-referred to the department.
If you find yourself pregnant, please inform the person who referred you or contact us directly and we will arrange to see you sooner if appropriate.
