What does your job involve?

I see and support patients and families with a family history of a genetic (hereditary) condition, or with symptoms that may indicate a genetic condition. I discuss the condition with the patient/family and the genetic testing options available, support them through genetic testing if they choose to have it, and support them with the results of genetic testing.

I also see patients during pregnancy who have a personal or family history of a genetic condition, discussing the chance of their current pregnancy having the condition, and arranging and supporting them with testing during the pregnancy if appropriate and if they wish to have it.

My job also involves providing advice, guidance and risk assessments to patients, such as those with a family history of cancer, and advising or referring them for additional screening as appropriate. As many aspects of genetic testing move to a mainstream setting, my job also involves providing education and support to colleagues in the mainstream setting, helping them to deliver genetic testing.

What role did you and your team play in the COVID-19 response?

Continued working in genetics, but provided appointments by telephone and video.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Being able to support patients and how rewarding it is.
