We provide care for patients with a wide array of endocrine disorders. Patients are seen in the Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) in the new purpose-built Wolfson Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic (IMS WDEC). This provides state-of-the-art facilities as well as close links with world-leading researchers, who undertake translational and clinical endocrine research within the IMS Metabolic Research Laboratories (IMS MRL).
Our aim
Our aim is to provide clinical excellence in the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with endocrine disorders. We are the Eastern regional centre for pituitary disease and pituitary surgery, and also provide a range of specialist and multidisciplinary clinics which cover thyroid disease & cancer, adrenal disorders, parathyroid disease, Turner Syndrome, genetic endocrine conditions and other endocrine cancers.
Patients are admitted for endocrine investigations either to the programmed short stay unit (PSSU) or to G6, the diabetes and endocrine ward. We also manage in-patients with endocrine problems under other teams, and jointly manage all patients undergoing pituitary surgery pre- and post-operatively. In daytime hours (0900 to 1700) an Endocrine specialist registrar is available to take referrals from other hospital teams and to offer urgent advice to GP’s. Other clinical enquires should be directed as referrals in the usual way.
Non-urgent advice: Information for patients
Many patients attending the endocrine clinic are under the care of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), and so we liaise closely with colleagues in many other specialties including clinical biochemistry, clinical pharmacology, surgery, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, oncology, clinical genetics and histopathology. The radiology department provides access to an extensive range of imaging techniques (e.g. CT, MRI, PET, Isotope scans) and specialised investigations (e.g. endoscopic ultrasound, angiography and selective arterial or venous sampling).

Referral information
All referrals are screened and prioritised by the consultant team, to direct patients to the most appropriate clinic. Where necessary, endocrine investigations are often arranged prior to a clinic appointment; in addition, written clinical advice may be offered to GPs to initiate treatment prior to a patient being seen in clinic.
